Sodium stearate is a white, oily powder with a slippery and fatty smell. Soluble in hot water or hot alcohol. The aqueous solution is alkaline due to hydrolysis, and the alcohol solution is neutral. It is prepared by the interaction of octadecanoic acid and sodium hydroxide. It is used in the manufacture of toothpaste and is also used as a water repellent and a plastic stabilizer.
