Cepharanthine is a bisexyl-isovailine alkaloid isolated from Stephanola capitana and Dipyridae.
It has the effect of anti-tumor, anti-malaria, antibacterial, regulating immune function and so on.
Modern research suggests that it also has the function of stimulating the reticuloendothelial system, activating hematopoietic tissue, promoting the proliferation of bone marrow tissue, and has been clinically used to prevent and treat the leukopenia caused by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other reasons in cancer patients, and has received certain effects, therefore, cepharanthine is considered to be a low-toxicity and effective leukocyte raising drug.
Cepharanthine can partially reverse the multidrug resistance of leukemia cells, and the effect is obviously better than the classical reversal drug verapamil, and the cytotoxic effect is much less than verapamil at reverse dose. Foreign studies have also shown that stephanidine has a good reverse effect on a variety of drug resistant cells. Stephanolin can enhance the immune function of macrophages and cells in vivo. In Japan, Cepharanthine has been used clinically as a leukocyte enhancing drug for more than a year, with no obvious toxic side effects. It has been used in clinical experimental treatment of pneumoconiosis in China for many years. These results suggest that Cepharanthine has great clinical value.
