Properties:
Alizarin, also known as "1, 2-dihydroxy-anthraquinone", is produced from ethanol in an orange or red triclinoid crystal.
Used for cotton dyeing and printing, with aluminum mordant to get bright red, with chrome dye to get red, with iron mordant to get purple, with tin mordant to get yellow light red. It is also used for dyeing wool and silk of silkworms and for producing alizarin lake. They've recently been replaced by ice dyes. In addition, it can be used as acid-base indicator [pH5.5(yellow) ~ 6.1(red)], and as aluminum, indium, mercury and other drop test indicator.
1,2-Dihydroxy anthraquinone has inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and can inhibit the permeability of connective tissue of rat skin. It is similar to rutin and may have anti-inflammatory effect. It can be used safely as cosmetic color and lipstick color without any side effects. Combined with some phenolic hydroxyl and aniline derivatives, it can be used as a non-irritating dye additive for oxidation hair, so that the color is soft and durable.
