Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate is an organic sodium salt of 4-phenylbutyric acid. A prodrug of phenylacetic acid used to treat urea cycle disorders. It has the effects of prodrug, EC 3.5.1.98 (histone deacetylase) inhibitor, neuroprotective agent, orphan drug, and elderly protective agent. It contains 4-phenylbutyrate.

Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER) inhibitor that can be used in research on diseases such as cancer and infections.
