A dextrohexane aldose obtained by the hydrolysis of lactose, formula C6H12O6. D-Galactose is white crystal or crystalline powder, no special odor, solubility in water: 680 g/L (25°C); Slightly soluble in glycerol and alcohol. D-Galactose is a component of AGAR, plant gum, viscose, raffinose, lactose, meliose and other sugars. D-Galactose exists in snail protein glands, frog eggs, brain nerve tissues and other animal materials in the form of galactoside and galactose anhydride molecules. Freedom is found in milk. D-Galactose combines with glucose to form lactose. Mucic acid can be obtained after oxidation.

Preparation method:
The easiest way to prepare D-Galactose is the hydrolysis of lactose, to obtain an equal amount of D-galactose and D-glucose mixture, with fermentation to remove D-glucose, that is, to obtain pure D-galactose, the general yield is very high. Galactose can also be prepared from D-lythreose by chemical synthesis of growing carbon chains.
