It is a naturally occurring deoxygenated sugar found mainly in plants and some bacteria. Unlike most natural sugars, its configuration is L, not D. It is the main structural component of the cell wall of plant and binds to other compounds, such as phenols. Due to its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, it is now used as an anti-wrinkle agent.
