Uses: acidity regulator, chelating agent, stabilizer, etc. China stipulates that potassium citrate can be used in all kinds of food, according to the production needs of appropriate use. Medically, it can be used to control uric acid or cystine from or in kidney stones, and to prevent hypokalemia and alkalinized urine.
It is used in food industry as buffer, chelating agent, stabilizer, antioxidant, emulsifier, flavoring agent, etc. Potassium citrate can also be used in milk and dairy products, jelly , jam, meat, canned hydrogel snacks, emulsification of cheese, preservation of citrus, etc. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry for hypokalemia and potassium deficiency and alkalized urine.
Potassium citrate is the most commonly used drug to prevent stones. Studies have found that acid-base value and citric acid value in urine have a very close relationship with the formation of urinary stones. In acidic urine (pH<5.5), the solubility of uric acid is very low, which is easy to cause uric acid stones. In alkaline urine (pH>7), calcium phosphate or magnesium phosphate stones are easily formed. Citric acid in the urine is lower than the normal value in 63% of patients with urinary calculi, and potassium citrate can provide a large amount of citric acid to increase the pH value in the urine, so it has a very significant therapeutic effect on uric acid calculi, low calcium citrate calculi and renal tubular toxicosis caused by calcium calculi. However, this will cause an increase in potassium ions and a decrease in ions in the urine, which is because potassium citrate not only supplements the citric acid, but also supplements the potassium. Because potassium is metabolized quickly in the body, there is no change in the blood potassium content, so it has little impact on the body. The daily total urine volume, oxalic acid, phosphate, sodium, magnesium, sulfate and uric acid in patients with uric acid stones were not affected by taking potassium citrate.
