Calcium stearate is also called calcium stearate. White light crystalline powder. Chemical formula (C17H35COO)2Ca. Molecular weight 607.00. Melting point 179 ~ 180ºC, subject to high thermal decomposition. Insoluble in water, cold ethanol and ether, soluble in hot benzene, toluene and turpentine, slightly soluble in hot ethanol and ether. It is prepared by the reaction of melted stearic acid with sodium hydroxide to produce dilute soap, and then with calcium chloride.
This product can be used as a heat stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride and has excellent lubricity. The heat stabilization efficiency is general, less than barium stearate, lead stearate, tin stearate and cadmium stearate. But cheap and easy to obtain, less toxic, good processing. It has a synergistic effect with zinc soap and epoxy compound, and can improve thermal stability. It is often used in soft products requiring non-toxic such as food packaging film and medical equipment. With basic lead salt and lead soap and used in hard products, the gelation rate can be improved. Calcium stearate is used in polyethylene and polypropylene to eliminate the adverse effects of residual catalysts on the color and stability of the resin. It is also widely used as lubricant and defilm agent for thermosetting plastics such as polyolefin, polyester reinforced plastics, phenolic resins and amino resins.
