Calcium stearate is also called calcium stearate. White light crystalline powder. Chemical formula (C17H35COO)2Ca. Molecular weight 607.00. Melting point 179 ~ 180ºC, subject to high thermal decomposition. Insoluble in water, cold ethanol and ether, soluble in hot benzene, toluene and turpentine, slightly soluble in hot ethanol and ether. Decompose with strong acid into stearic acid and corresponding calcium salt. It absorbs water in the air. Lipophilic intolerant microorganism. High temperature decomposition to produce stearone and hydrocarbon. Non-toxic. The corresponding oleate is often mixed in the industrial. Used as a stabilizer and lubricant for polyvinyl chloride; As halogen absorbent in polyethylene and polypropylene; Lubricants for polyolefin fibers and molded products; Lubricants and release agents for phenolic, amino and other thermosetting plastics; Thickening agent for grease; Waterproof agent for waterproof fabric; Varnish and pencil lead lubricants, etc. Food grade calcium stearate is used as an anti-caking agent. It is prepared by the reaction of melted stearic acid with sodium hydroxide to produce dilute soap, and then with calcium chloride.
This product can be used as a heat stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride and has excellent lubricity. The heat stabilization efficiency is general, less than barium stearate, lead stearate, tin stearate and cadmium stearate. But cheap and easy to obtain, less toxic, good processing. It has a synergistic effect with zinc soap and epoxy compound, and can improve thermal stability. It is often used in soft products requiring non-toxic such as food packaging film and medical equipment. With basic lead salt and lead soap and used in hard products, the gelation rate can be improved. Calcium stearate is used in polyethylene and polypropylene to eliminate the adverse effects of residual catalysts on the color and stability of the resin. It is also widely used as lubricant and defilm agent for thermosetting plastics such as polyolefin, polyester reinforced plastics, phenolic resins and amino resins.
