Alginic acid is used in a variety of oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations. In tablets and capsules, alginate is prescribed in 1% 5% concentration as a binder and disintegrator. Alginic acid is widely used as a thickening agent and suspension aid for various pastes, creams and gels, and as a stabilizer for O/W emulsions. Near-alginate has also been studied as an ophthalmic formulation. Therapeutically, alginate is used as an antacid. It is used in combination with H2 receptor antagonists to treat gastroesophageal reflux. The anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antitumor activities of chemically modified alginate derivatives have been investigated. In the field of controlled release preparations, the preparation of indomethacin sustained-release particles from alginate (sodium alginate) and gelatin aqueous colloid coagglutinates has been studied. In addition, as a controlled release system for macromolecules bound to liposomes, microspheres containing liposomes have been produced, which are then coated with alginate and poly-L-lysine. The physical properties, water absorption and permeability of sodium alginate have been characterized for the application of controlled drug release.
