Chemical Property:
Succinic acid is colorless crystal; Relative density 1.572(25/4ºC), melting point 188ºC, decomposition at 235ºC; Distillation under reduced pressure can sublimate; Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, ether .
In industry, succinic acid is often produced by catalytic reduction of butenediic acid, and succinic acid can also be prepared by hydrolysis of succinitrile. In the laboratory, succinic acid can be prepared by reacting two molecules of diethyl malonate sodium salt with iodine, followed by water decarboxylation.

Main Uses:
An important use of succinic acid is the preparation of five-membered heterocyclic compounds, for example, succinic acid rapidly loses water when heated to form succinic anhydride, which is a ring compound. Succinic anhydride is an important raw material for the manufacture of drugs, dyes and alkyd resins. Succinic anhydride is co-heated to form succinimide. The hydrogen on the imide group of succinimide can be replaced to produce n-bromosuccinimide, which is a brominating reagent and mild oxidant for organic synthesis. Succinic acid has antispasmodic, expectorant and diuretic effects in medicine. Diethyl succinate is an important intermediate in organic synthesis. Dibutyl succinate and dioctyl ester are plasticizers for plastics. Diallyl succinate copolymerized with 1, 3-butadiene can produce artificial rubber.
