Chemical Property/Description
Is white crystalline powder density: 1.10 melting point: 93-94ºC, anhydrous melting point is 117ºC Solubility: soluble in 300 parts of water, 70 parts of benzene, soluble in alcohol  insoluble.


Main Uses:
It is a common ligand for spectral determination of metals and spectral analysis of CO2 reduction. Used for Cu(2) catalyzed organic boric acid crosslinking reaction, etc.
Can also be used as a REDOX indicator, determination of iron titanite reagent. Form a complex with iron, copper, cobalt, nickel and 2,2 '-bipyridine and a red complex with Fe² +, 2,2' -dipyridine-3,3 '-dicarboxylic acid by oxidation with . It can be used as a quantitative colorimetric reagent for copper and iron, and as an indicator for titrating iron salts with  sulfate. It can also be used as a dye for animal fibers.
O-phenanthroline Fe(2) indicator can be prepared by dissolving 1.485g o-phenanthroline monohydrate and 0.695gFeSO4·7H2O in 100mL water. Indicator for ceric sulfate titration of iron salts.
A related ligand is erythrophenanthroline (BPT), 4, 7-diphenyl-1, 10-phenanthroline. Phenanthroline can also be used to determine the content of alkyl lithium compounds. The specific step is to interact the sample with a small amount (about 1mg) of phenanthroline, color it dark, and then titrate it with alcohols until it reaches the end point of colorless titration. In a solution with a pH of 2~9, orthophiline has a colour sensitivity with Fe² + ion.
This reaction has a high selectivity and produces a very stable orange-red complex, lgK stable =21.3 (20 ° C), in a solution with a maximum absorption peak at 510nm (visible light). Using this colour development reaction, Trace iron can be determined by visible light spectrophotometry.
