Magnesium stearate is a variety of solid organic acid compounds of magnesium, mainly composed of magnesium stearate and magnesium palmitate in varying proportions. Magnesium stearate is a widely used drug excipient, which is non-toxic orally, but can cause diarrhea or mucosal irritation when taken in large quantities.
White loose powder, odorless and tasteless, fine and grainless, with a light characteristic aroma.
Magnesium stearate, also known as magnesium stearate, is a fatty acid salt type anionic surfactant, the appearance of white fine powder, slightly special odor, there is a sense of slimy. Soluble in hot aliphatic hydrocarbon, hot aromatic hydrocarbon, hot oil, but not soluble in alcohol and water, in case of strong acid decomposition into stearic acid and the corresponding magnesium salt. Magnesium stearate has good adhesion to the skin and good lubricity. It is used in powder products in cosmetics to improve adhesion and lubricity.
Magnesium stearate is a new pharmaceutical excipient, which can be used as film coating material of solid preparation, thickening agent of colloidal liquid preparation, suspension agent, etc.
Magnesium stearate can be used as polyvinyl chloride heat stabilizer, stabilizing effect is similar to calcium stearate, can be combined with zinc soap or calcium soap for food packaging materials, but it is not widely used. Magnesium stearate can also be used as plastic products release agent, cosmetic powder, moisturizing ointment raw material, pharmaceutical tablet powder molding agent, paint translucent smoothing agent. In the laboratory, magnesium stearate is produced by the compound decomposition reaction of sodium stearate and magnesium sulfate, and it can also be refined by combining the mixture of edible solid organic acids (stearic acid, palmitic acid) with magnesium oxide.
