Properties
Light yellow flammable liquid that turns reddish brown when exposed to air and sunlight. The relative density is 0.9984. Melting point -14.7 ºC. Flash point 85ºC. Boiling point 200.2ºC. Refractive index 1.5725. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether. It evaporates with steam. Reduction of o-nitrotoluene by iron powder in ammonium chloride medium or in dilute acid. The reaction product is separated and rectified to obtain the finished product. O-nitrotoluene and hydrogen are preheated to 260 ~ 280ºC in an electric induction heater, hydrogenated in the presence of copper catalyst to produce o-toluidine. The reaction gas is condensed and then distilled to produce the finished product.
Use for the manufacture of bordeaux based GBC, red based G, red based RL, naphthol ASD, acid rose 3B, basic fuchsin and basic rose T and other intermediates, but also pesticides (such as chloramidine) and saccharin and other intermediates. It is also the raw material for preparing toluene arsenate acid.
