Chemical Property/Description:

Colorless monoclinic crystal or white crystalline powder. Stable in the air. Dissolve in approximately 12 parts cold water, 3 parts boiling water, and slightly soluble in ethanol. PH 3.8-4.2 (50g/L, H2O, 20 ºC). Melting point 295-300 ºC. Density ρ (25) 1.636-1.640g/mL.

 

Main Uses:

Potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) is an important chemical reagent with the following main uses:

PH measurement and preparation of buffer solution
As a buffer for pH measurement, it is commonly used to prepare standard buffer solutions. For example, a 0.05 mol/L KHP solution with a pH of 4.008 at 25 ºC can be adjusted to a pH range of 2.2-5.5 when mixed with hydrochloric acid.

Reference substances in analytical chemistry
Used for calibrating alkaline titrants (such as NaOH solution), they need to be dried at 100-125 ºC to remove moisture before use. The reaction product, potassium sodium phthalate, is weakly alkaline and is often indicated by phenolphthalein.

Other applications
Including being used as analytical reagents, pyrotechnic sounding agents, etc.
