Main Uses:
Cesium carbonate exhibits many properties in organic synthesis due to the soft Lewis acidity of the cesium ion, which makes it soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols, DMF and ethers. The good solubility of cesium carbonate in organic solvents makes it an effective inorganic base to participate in palladium-catalyzed chemical reactions such as Heck, Suzuki and Sonogashira reactions. For example, Suzuki cross-coupling reaction can obtain 86% yield with the support of cesium carbonate. The same reactions with sodium carbonate or  produced only 29% and 50% of the same reactions. Similarly, in the Heck reaction between methacrylate, cesium carbonate showed a very obvious superiority over other inorganic bases, such as potassium carbonate, sodium acetate,  and potassium phosphate.
Cesium carbonate is also very important in the o-alkylation reaction compounds. It is speculated that the O-alkylation reaction in non-aqueous solvents induced by cesium carbonate is likely to undergo phenoxy anion, so that the alkylation reaction can also occur for highly active secondary halides that are easy to eliminate.
Cesium carbonate also has important uses in the synthesis of natural products, such as in the synthesis of Lipogrammistin-A compound key one-step closed-loop reaction, using cesium carbonate as an inorganic base can obtain a high yield closed-loop product.
In addition, due to its good solubility in organic solvents, cesium carbonate also has an important use in solid supported organic reactions. For example, the three-component reaction with solid supported halide is induced in carbon dioxide atmosphere to synthesize carboxylate or carbamate compound with high yield.
Under microwave radiation, cesium carbonate as a base can also achieve esterification reaction between benzoic acid and solid supporting halide.
